How to Create a Virtual Hard Disk by Using VMware

To create and add a new, empty virtual hard drive to a Windows virtual machine:

  1. Shut down the virtual machine.
  2. Go to Virtual Machine 
  3. Click on Settings
  4. Click Add Device
  5. Go to New Hard Disk
  6. Click Next.
  7. Click Create a new virtual disk and click Next.
  8. To go to the Disk Capacity screen, specify the space you want and how you want the file to be stored.
  9. Click Next
  10. Select the location to store the virtual disk in the storage folder of the virtual machine.
  11. Click Finish
  12. Power on the virtual machine.
  13. Initialize and format the new drive.

To initialize and format the new drive in Windows Vista/Windows 7/ Windows Server 2008:

  1. In the Start menu, type diskmgmt.msc and click OK
  2. Right-click the disk to be initialized and then click Initialize Disk. Windows prompts you to initialize the disk before Logical Disk Manager can access it
  3. Select MBR and click OK
  4. Right-click the unallocated space and click New Simple Volume
  5. Click Next
  6. Enter the size of the partition (in MB) and click Next
  7. Select a drive letter and click Next
  8. Select the file system type and volume name
  9. Click Next
  10. Click Finish. Windows prompts you to format the drive
  11. Click Format
